CARS TIRES

Tire pressure is a measure of the amount of air in a vehicle's tires, in pounds per square inch. The required service involves checking the tires' pressure with a pressure gauge, at least monthly, if not more frequently. But then you knew that.

Why do I have to do this?     Having the proper tire pressure is a crucial safety issue. Next to the brakes, the tires are the most important safety devices on your car. Incorrect tire pressure will compromise cornering, braking and stability. And in the worst-case scenario, improper tire pressure can lead to tire failure — and a serious accident. Incorrect tire pressure also will affect your comfort, fuel economy and tire life.

What happens if I don't do this?     If tire pressure is too high, then less of the tire touches the ground. As a consequence, your car will bounce around on the road. And when your tires are bouncing instead of firmly planted on the road, traction suffers and so do your stopping distances. You'll also feel a decrease in ride comfort. (Hint: If you notice that every tie you own has coffee on it, check your tire pressure. It may be too high.)

C.A.R.S. Tire Pressure:

Most vehicles list tire pressure requirements on one of the door posts, most often the driver's.

If tire pressure is too low, then too much of the tire's surface area touches the ground, which increases friction between the road and the tire. As a result, not only will your tires wear prematurely, but they also could overheat. Overheating can lead to tread separation — and a nasty accident. One sign of low tire pressure is if your tires squeal when cornering.

You need to check your tire pressure even if your tires aren't leaking. Why? Because tire pressure also changes with the temperature outside. Tire pressure decreases by about 1 pound per square inch for every 10-degree drop in outside air temperature. So if you last had your tire pressure checked in July, when it was 80 degrees outside, and it's now January — and the temperature is minus 20 — your tires may be underinflated by 10 pounds, which is dangerous.

Tire Rotation:     We know that all tires rotate. But we're talking about another kind of rotation — rotating tires to different corners of the car and maybe even reversing the direction in which they turn.
Many tires are rotated front-to-back and side-to-side, but some tires are directional, which means they're only supposed to turn in one direction. They have to stay on the same side of the car. Directional tires often have arrows on the tire's sidewall to show you the direction in which they should turn.

If you're not sure which kind of tires you have, check with your mechanic.

Should I do this service when it's recommended?
The financial benefit of rotating tires is that you'll increase the useful life of the tire. Instead, you can ask your mechanic to rotate your tires when they're already off your car for another service, such as a brake repair. th
ey may do it for Less.

Tires for Winter at CARS auto repair Utah

TIRES
Winter is here and you want to make sure your tires are in good condition.

You should check the condition of your tires' treads.
The minimum acceptable tread depth is 3/32 inch. This is about the distance from the edge of a penny to the top of Abe's head. But, if you are leaving on a trip, you wouldn't want the minimum tread.

While you're looking at the tire tread, keep an eye out for an uneven wear pattern. (Uneven) means the tire is more worn on one edge. This usually means you need a wheel alignment. Also, run your fingers along the tread and feel for lumps. The presence of lumps could mean that the tire is not balanced correctly.

Check Engine Light - What it means CARS Complete Auto Repair Service

Check Engine Light -
What the light means and what to do if it comes on.
What The Light Means
      1) Onboard Diagnostics (OBD)
          A)  This controls and monitors your vehicle performance - such as engine speed,  (RPM)
fuel mixture, ignition timing. The computer also tells the automatic transmission when to shift.
          B)  When the computer finds a problem it can't correct, it turns on a light that is labeled

                 "engine, or Service engine"
        C)  When the light come on the computer has stored a "trouble code" in its memory that
that identifies the source of the problem. (such as - malfunctioning sensor or a
               misfiring engine.

 D)   This is then read with an electronic scan tool or a Diagnostic computer.

What to do
If the 'check engine" light comes on it will either blink or remain constant, depending on the problem.  But it means it is time to get your car/truck checked.

      1)   In late - model cars it usually indicates a misfire that can be burning up your fuel dumping it into your exhaust system.( Have car or truck looked at a.s.a.p.)
*This can quickly damage your catalytic converter- requiring expensive repair.
     2) If the light is steady - Just schedule and appointment  - not usually an emergency.

Today's automotive computers often try to compensate when there's a problem; so you may not notice deterioration in performance, even though your fuel mileage is suffering and your vehicle is emitting levels
of hydrocarbons & pollutants.

Tips if you Check Engine Light Comes On
     1) Check your dashboard lights / gauges for
           A)     Low oil pressure
           B)     Overheating
These conditions mean you should pull over and shut off the engine a.s.a.p. in a safe
                      place.
On most cars - Yellow "check engine" means investigate - giving you time to
                             investigate and schedule an appointment.
          C)     Try tightening your gas cap. ( keep in mind, it may take several trips before the light
                    resets.
          D)     Reduce speed and load.  If  the 'check engine" light is blinking or you notice any serious
*Performance problems, such as a loss of power, reduced speed.  Reduce your speed & try to reduce the load ( if your towing a trailer) on the engine.  ( make an appointment  to have code read)

The best advice is to read your owner's manual beforehand and learn the purpose of the "check engine" light and every other gauge and warning indicator on your dashboard.
