Breaking in Winter

Breaking in Winter:

Visit Complete Auto Repair Service = CARS and let us help you halt cold weather brake problems in their tracks. We can diagnose your car problems with a Complete Vehicle Inspection, and recommend brake services.

Snow quickly becomes liquid when it comes into contact with a warm snow which becomes rust.   Salt accelerates the rusting process.

Some degree of surface rust is unavoidable, too much rust on your brake rotors can cause a problem known as pitting, waring away at your brake rotors, leaving them scored and rough, which allows rust particles to contaminate the brake pads.

The first signs of wear are: weird sounds, ( squeal, squeak ) reduced stopping power, and stiff braking , or "sluggish" "lose power" feeling when you take your foot off the brake pedal, and a burning smell.

If you notice any of these it might be time for a check up and New Tires.

Stop by CARS and let us make sure your car is in good running order with at tune up and check for winter safety.

Clutch Repair in Utah at CARS Complete Auto Repair Service

The clutch in your vehicle works by applying force against a flywheel mated to your engine using a clutch disc and pressure plate. The clutch is made of friction material and is designed to "grab" the flywheel as it turns.
Over time, your clutch disc will wear down and begin to slip. When this happens, you will have trouble accelerating in any gear because the clutch will lose the ability to "grab" the flywheel. At this point, the clutch disc will need to be fixed.

Check Engine Light - What it means CARS Complete Auto Repair Service

Check Engine Light -
What the light means and what to do if it comes on.
What The Light Means
      1) Onboard Diagnostics (OBD)
          A)  This controls and monitors your vehicle performance - such as engine speed,  (RPM)
fuel mixture, ignition timing. The computer also tells the automatic transmission when to shift.
          B)  When the computer finds a problem it can't correct, it turns on a light that is labeled

                 "engine, or Service engine"
        C)  When the light come on the computer has stored a "trouble code" in its memory that
that identifies the source of the problem. (such as - malfunctioning sensor or a
               misfiring engine.

 D)   This is then read with an electronic scan tool or a Diagnostic computer.

What to do
If the 'check engine" light comes on it will either blink or remain constant, depending on the problem.  But it means it is time to get your car/truck checked.

      1)   In late - model cars it usually indicates a misfire that can be burning up your fuel dumping it into your exhaust system.( Have car or truck looked at a.s.a.p.)
*This can quickly damage your catalytic converter- requiring expensive repair.
     2) If the light is steady - Just schedule and appointment  - not usually an emergency.

Today's automotive computers often try to compensate when there's a problem; so you may not notice deterioration in performance, even though your fuel mileage is suffering and your vehicle is emitting levels
of hydrocarbons & pollutants.

Tips if you Check Engine Light Comes On
     1) Check your dashboard lights / gauges for
           A)     Low oil pressure
           B)     Overheating
These conditions mean you should pull over and shut off the engine a.s.a.p. in a safe
                      place.
On most cars - Yellow "check engine" means investigate - giving you time to
                             investigate and schedule an appointment.
          C)     Try tightening your gas cap. ( keep in mind, it may take several trips before the light
                    resets.
          D)     Reduce speed and load.  If  the 'check engine" light is blinking or you notice any serious
*Performance problems, such as a loss of power, reduced speed.  Reduce your speed & try to reduce the load ( if your towing a trailer) on the engine.  ( make an appointment  to have code read)

The best advice is to read your owner's manual beforehand and learn the purpose of the "check engine" light and every other gauge and warning indicator on your dashboard.

CV Joint in Carbon County at Utah CARS Auto Repair

Checking the CV Joint should be part of your Regular Maintenance .
CV Joint Failure
Constant velocity joints (CV joints) are found on many cars and even some trucks. Though vehicle manufacturers are reintroducing rear-wheel drive on more new cars, over 80 percent of all the cars on the road today are front-wheel-drive, and every one has four CV joints. The outer CV joints are usually the ones that most often need to be replaced. There are two reasons, one is that the outer CV joints wear more than the inner CV joints, The outer boots on the outer joints are more apt to fail than the ones on the inner joints. CV Joint boot failure is bad news for any CV joint because it dooms the joint to premature failure. A spit, cracked loose or torn boot will throw grease, draining the joint of its vital fluids = lubricants. Sooner or later the joint will run out of Lubricant, which is a bad thing for the metal-to-metal surfaces. They must withstand height pressure loads and constant friction. A boot that doesn’t seal can also allow outside contaminants, such as road splash and dirt, to enter the joint and havoc havoc on its precision machined and polished surfaces. If the boot problem isn’t discovered almost immediately, joint failure will usually follow within a few thousand miles.

Some symptoms of CV Joint failure:

1) Popping or clicking noises when turning.2) A clunk sound when accelerating, decelerating or when putting the car into drive.3) A vibration or shudder when accelerating. 4) A growling or humming noise.

Transmission at CARS Complete Auto Repair Service in Utah

Transmission fluid is a slippery liquid that acts as a lubricant for all of the moving parts inside your transmission. In an automatic transmission, this fluid also serves as a coolant and a viscous fluid that transmits power from the engine to the transmission.
Changing automatic transmission fluid is best left to a mechanic equipped with a transmission flusher, like this which replaces the fluid more thoroughly than you could achieve with gravity alone.
A variety of fluids are used for different transmissions. Automatic transmissions use automatic transmission fluid. Manual transmissions use a variety of oils: regular motor oil, heavyweight hypoid gear oil or even automatic transmission fluid in some cases. Your owner's manual will tell you what your transmission calls for.
Whether you have a manual or an automatic transmission. Manual: Most manufacturers recommend that manual transmission fluid be changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Under heavy-duty use, some manufacturers suggest changing transmission fluid every 15,000 miles.
Automatic: Service intervals for an automatic transmission vary from every 30,000 miles. The typical service interval is 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Changing it more often does no harm.
Why should you do this?
Manual: In a manual transmission, the problem is not so much the fluid degradation, but rather fluid contamination. This contamination occurs over time as the synchronizers, bearings and gears in the transmission wear out. The resulting metal particles then float around in the lubricant. And we all know that oil with microscopic particles of metal in it does not lubricate as well as clean oil. So if these contaminants are not drained out, they will shorten the life of your transmission.
Automatic: Because more heat is generated in an automatic transmission, automatic transmission fluid actually degrades and breaks down with use.
In addition, like in a manual transmission, automatic transmission fluid will also become contaminated with worn bits of the transmission. If these contaminants are not drained out, they will shorten the life of your transmission.
What happens if you don't do this?http://www.carsbellingham.comhttps://www.carsbellingham.com
If you don't change the transmission fluid on schedule, you'll be lubricating your transmission with metal shavings and other contaminants. This will shorten the transmission's life. In other words, changing your transmission fluid at the correct interval is a good investment.
Is there any maintenance required between intervals?
Automakers have gotten better in recent years about labeling or color-coding dipsticks. The ring on the right is red to match the automatic transmission fluid, the level of which this dipstick measures. The yellow ring is clearly marked "engine oil."
Yes, It's important to regularly check the transmission fluid level between service intervals. Letting your car run low on transmission fluid can cause the transmission to shift improperly — or not at all. It also can harm the internal parts of your transmission, which will not be properly lubricated. Unfortunately, you may not hear any noises or have other clues that your transmission is low on fluid, until it's too late. So it's important to get it checked.
Here's how you can check your transmission fluid level:
Manual: Checking the transmission fluid in a manual transmission can be difficult. A few thoughtful manufacturers have included a dipstick, but that's the exception rather than the rule. If you own a car with a manual transmission, we suggest that you ask your mechanic to check the fluid level when your car is up on the lift during an oil change. It takes just a minute.
Automatic: If you own a car with an automatic transmission, your car will have a dipstick for this purpose. Be careful not to make the common mistake of confusing the transmission dipstick with the crankcase dipstick.

Mufflers and Exhaust System at CARS Complete Auto Repair Service Utah

What is it?
Your car’s exhaust system has come a long way from the old days of exhaust pipes and mufflers.
Today, the exhaust system is safety and emissions control rolled into one.
Have your car’s exhaust system inspected regularly and check it immediately if you suspect any problems.

What does it do? The exhaust system routes dangerous exhaust gas from the engine out and away from the car to keep from affecting the occupants.

Next, the exhaust system reduces exhaust noise from the engine. The catalytic converter reduces the level of harmful pollutants in the exhaust. The oxygen sensors mounted in the exhaust system monitor the level of oxygen in the exhaust gases to maintain efficient engine operation and to monitor the converter’s operation.
Typical Wear and Tear Maintain a safe car with regular exhaust system checks.

Factors that affect replacement requirements include:
•Driving habits (short trips take their toll on exhaust system life)
•Road conditions (salt, road spray, bumps) •Vehicle type
•Age of exhaust system parts Symptoms •Loud noise
•Rattling noise when starting, accelerating or braking
•Drowsiness while driving •Rotten eggs smell.
That being said:  Stay safe on the roads and when you need help Call
